Tuesday, May 21st! In light of tumblr’s big bonanza!!!

Thursday, January 24th! A bunch of superheroes based on real-life new media superstars for OMMA magazine (Online Media & Marketing Agencies); that’s me with 2 of them at an awards dinner at the Marriott in times Square, where I presented a flash animation I designed and narrated: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bTHjtZgbAI&list=UUwkw6QB6OFKcfxK17macOlQ&index=29

TONIGHT IN NEW YORK CITY I gotta be a superhero, ‘cause I’ll be reading/discussing my AUTEUR THEORY OF COMICS—and projecting it sequentially on the screen—at The NY COMICS & PICTURE-STORY SYMPOSIUM, 7-9pm (with another speaker first) at Parsons/The New School, 66 5th Avenue (at 13th Street), room 818, NYC. Free and open to the public! (pic from my panel at this summer’s San Diego Comicon) http://nycomicssymposium.wordpress.com/

Friday, September 14: now that football season has kicked in, here’s my wraparound cover for the FIRST time the Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl (‘08)!

A few weeks after 9/11, I heard a radio interview with the widow of Louis Nacke, one of the passengers on flight 93 who fought the hijackers; she said he had a Superman tattoo on his shoulder. So a few months later, I did this portrait of Nackeas Superman for the Society of Illustrators 911 Memorial Exhibition in Feb ‘02, contacted his widow and presented her with a framed blowup of the art, and read a speech of mine at the opening; for a video of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IB0tQBkj_ds&list=UUwkw6QB6OFKcfxK17macOlQ&index=20&feature=plcp …and for text of the speech: http://www.arlenschumer.com/images/stories/history_pdfs/NACKE-art-Speech.pdf

Wednesday, August 22: back on the beam with my FIRST real commercial illustration (an 8-page comic book-sized piece w/color cover & b&w interiors that I wrote & illustrated), and my first custom-designed superhero (Multiman was a mannequin with multiple heads and arms/legs that the client wanted me to turn into a superhero to encourage retailers to have fun with it vs. just draping it in clothes).

I’M the Superhero for your day TONITE!

AUGUST 4th: Did this for my friend Michael Dooley, back when he was a Creative Director at the LA Times—now Mike’s a Design History Professor at Loyola Marymount U in LA (where i lectured on “The Graphic Design of Comic Book Art” last year for him: http://teachevil.com/2011/09/27/schumer/); they were called “Jubileer” and “The Resumator”—and they ended up dressing actors as these characters and making public appearances (gotta dig up the photos i thought i had)!
